2016 PublicSource internship
PublicSource is an online news organization in Pittsburgh, providing Pennsylvania citizens with in-depth information. We write stories to explain complex issues in the areas of criminal justice, the environment, health, and politics.
We collaborate with about 50 media partners across the state, including newspapers, radio, television and other online news providers. Last year, our most shared story reached nearly six million readers.
Our major stories are in-depth and use graphics, data, maps and investigative techniques to tell readers about news outside the breaking news of each day.
We’re looking for someone who can:
- Generate story ideas, comprehensively research the topics and identify sources.
- Approach a variety of sources, from top politicians to neighborhood advocates, on sensitive topics without hesitation.
- Write clearly and accurately and has an eye for opportunities to incorporate data, photos, graphics and video.
- Someone with solid organizational and time management skills.
- A team player who will jump into the mix of a small newsroom with enthusiasm and ideas.
- A detail oriented fact-checker who knows the appropriate way to source facts.
- Skills in editing, photography, video, data viz and other forms of multimedia and social media are a plus.
PublicSource is a nonprofit newsroom with a small team of dedicated journalists. We will ask an intern to contribute to writing some daily news posts and to fact-check other reporters’ stories. We will coach interns on forming in-depth story ideas and organizing and distilling mountains of information in an engaging way.
If reporting and writing isn’t your thing, we would entertain applications by students with skills in graphical design, coding, data analysis, photography, videography and marketing.
Our offices are at 477 Melwood Ave. in the Pittsburgh Filmmakers building, so we’re convenient to Oakland and on the bus line. If you’re interested in an internship, please contact Halle Stockton at hstockton@publicsource.org.
