is looking for interns for the 2016 summer and fall semesters. The NewPeople is a monthly print publication reaching about 3,000 people in Pittsburgh
and throughout the country, written and edited by an open collective of volunteers since 1979. Articles cover local and global issues related to peace, human rights, and racial, environmental, and economic justice. Learn more at
interns will choose a specific issue area to cover in a series including monthly print articles and regular content on our Tumblr and Twitter accounts. Writers should examine these complex issues through an intersectional lense throughout their series. We
are interested in writers with a background in these areas either through your education or your lived experiences. Writers will also receive articles in their issue area to edit.
Interns are welcome to attend editorial collective meetings but are not required to. This work can be done at the Merton Center or from a remote location.

Journalism & Media Management: This
person will be responsible for editing articles assigned to them. If available, it is encouraged that they attend New People
meetings and take on article assignments as they come up. Each month this person would come up with a topic of interest and write an article on it in addition to being assigned articles. Must be able to complete articles by the 13th of every month unless
otherwise specified. This person will also be responsible for adding articles contained in each issue to our website. The intern will learn how to edit, manage and improve our wix website and will be responsible for editing our blog. Previous experience with
wix welcome but not required. Time Commitment 5-10 hours per week
Editorial Collective Internship:
This person is required to attend collective meetings twice a month. The intern will receive articles, format articles, assign editors, help with layout and will be responsible for reading all
articles as they come in to give constructive feedback on article content to the rest of the collective. This person will work closely with the newspaper coordinator and must be willing to have strong opinions and relay them to the group in a constructive
way. There will also be an opportunity to contribute articles, if interested. This internship can be for one person and would range from 7-15 hours per week depending on the time of the month. Some work can be done out of office. If split between two people,
time commitment would range from 5-10 hours per week per person.
Social Media & Communications Outreach:
This intern will be working as a project liason for the Thomas Merton Center’s social media, supporting the work of our projects and other activist happenings throughout Pittsburgh. This person will be responsible for updating the Thomas Merton Center calendar,
maintaining an active presence on TMC’s social media (twitter, facebook, tumblr) and create and send our weekly activist eblast highlighting activist activities in Pittsburgh. Time commitment: 5-7 hours per week.
