Public Relations Internship – Summer 2016
The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is inviting applications for a paid position for a summer Public Relations intern to work alongside the directors of Media Relations in executing publicity strategies and external/internal communications on behalf of the school and its constituencies. This is an excellent learning opportunity for someone seeking a future career in corporate communications, publicity, or media, community and public relations.

The responsibilities of this position will include:
- Media identification- research on specific journalists, media outlets, social media and issues. This responsibility will also include use of targeting software to build/update media lists and to develop tailored pitches and pitching profiles.
- Writing- drafting web stories, news releases, media advisories, message points, pitches, social media messages, internal communiques and correspondence. Knowledge and competency in AP style required.
- Working with faculty and students to write about events, research and more.
- News tracking activities- monitoring, research and preparation of analytics on news coverage of the school, school community and specific topics. This will also include identifying and working with news clips and online resources.
- Event coverage – attending presentations, lectures, competitions or special events to write or post to social media.
- Outreach activities – attending meetings with stakeholders and journalists and assisting with the execution of PR programs and events, which may require a myriad of tasks such as working a registration table or running errands.
- Internal activities – assist website, internal outlets, social media and collateral to support strategic priorities.
- General duties to support the school and communications team.
Qualifications required:
- Currently enrolled in college and studying communications, journalism or public relations.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Multimedia skills preferred; proficient in the use of social media and MS Office applications.
- Positive attitude and ability to work well with others and as a member of a team.
Term: 11 weeks, beginning May 23, 2016 and ending Aug. 5, 2016 (or May 31-Aug. 12).
Locations: Primarily at 6 PPG Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. An indeterminate amount of time will be spent weekly on the CMU campus: 5000 Forbes Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
Hours: Standard hours for this position are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday- Friday. However, the PR intern may be required to assist with events that require work during the evening and on weekends.
