Public Source Marketing Internship

2015 PublicSource marketing internship

PublicSource is a nonprofit online news organization in Pittsburgh, providing Pennsylvania citizens with in-depth information. We write stories to explain complex issues in the areas of criminal justice, the environment, health care (particularly aging and disability issues), and money and politics.

We collaborate with about 50 media partners across the state, including newspapers, radio, television and other online news providers. Last year, our most shared story reached nearly six million readers.

As a public-interest news group, we also organize community events that engage the public in critical, often ignored issues.

What we’re looking for:

  • Someone who can consider the audience and impact of PublicSource events; research which advocacy groups, foundations, businesses, etc., have a related mission; and then message, call or visit them to tell them why they should share it with their consumers/clients.
  • Someone who has fresh ideas for how to promote PublicSource to different age groups.
  • Someone with great social media skills (able to write catchy copy and find the handles/pages for groups who’d be interested in it).
  • Someone game to do market research. i.e. What are other groups like us doing to promote their work? What kind of events are they hosting? What businesses are sponsoring them?
  • Someone who can jump into the mix of a small newsroom with enthusiasm and ideas. (Humble enough to pick up cookies and water for an event and confident enough to meet and share ideas with team leaders.)

PublicSource is a nonprofit newsroom and does not pay interns, but we may pay an appropriate ‘bonus’ at the end of the internship period for outstanding work. If you have a professor who will give you credit, we’re happy to fill out the forms.

The schedule and length of internship is flexible, but we would prefer an intern to join us for at least 15 hours a week for three months. Our offices are at 477 Melwood Ave. in the Pittsburgh Filmmakers building, so we’re convenient to Oakland and on the bus line.

Please send a cover letter and resume by or before Aug. 17, 2015, to Halle Stockton at hstockton@publicsource.org. We already have an exciting project waiting for the right intern
