Title: Public Relations Intern Status: Internship (unpaid)
Reports: Reports to Director of Public Relations Period: January – May 2016
Summary
The Public Relations Intern will assist Veterans Leadership Program’s (VLP) communication efforts with the goal to attract and retain new clients, donors and volunteers by increasing our media and online presence. For the past 33 years, Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania has been the premier nonprofit organization that provides housing and employment services to local veterans living in the 18-county region. The Public Relations Intern will receive valuable work experience to add to his/her resume and portfolio.
Requirements
- Completed or working towards a degree in English, Marketing/Communications, Advertising/Public Relations, Multimedia Design or other related major. Interests in working for a nonprofit preferred
- Understanding of the basic principles of public relations and/or marketing and firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space
- Must be computer literate in Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop highly desired
- Knowledge of HTML, website content management and graphic design a plus
- Previous internship or related experience in marketing or communications a plus
- Excellent organizational, oral/written communication and time management skill
- Display professional appearance in accordance with agency policy
- Commitment to cultural sensitivity and respect for differences
- Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization’s mission
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in planning, writing and implementing content for e-newsletters, blogs and social media
- Update and maintain VLP’s social media presence including daily monitoring, posting, scheduling and analyzing data
- Design graphics for website, social media posts and blog posts as well as any flyers needed for agency events
- Update VLP’s current website and assist with the creation of VLP’s new website
- Assist with drafting, distributing and pitching news releases, media alerts and other stories
- Assist with creating marketing materials and planning awareness and giving campaigns
- Assist with creating and implementing VLP’s marketing plan for its annual fundraising event, A Tribute to Veterans
- Conduct research about Veterans issues and track media coverage and social media conversation of these topics
- Other tasks as assigned by Public Relations Director
Conditions of Employment
- Criminal history and Act 33 and Act 34 clearances.
- Position requires a valid PA driver’s license and good driving record.
